Owusu’s Aftershocks: A Memoir, out this week, swings between a period of depression that left the author all but emotionally immobilized and episodes from her youth and young adulthood. Being raised by her U.N. official father meant that she and her sister moved frequently as children (to England, Italy, Uganda, Ethiopia). It also meant that she often lived in conflict zones or places of instability, and grew up with an awareness that circumstance and fate separated her from her less fortunate neighbors. Though Owusu describes a family made up of many far-flung aunts and uncles, hers was a lonely life as well; when Owusu applied for college, she declared herself an orphan in order to qualify for financial aid. In many episodes in the book, she acts as a surrogate mother to her younger sister and younger half brother.

When Nadia Owusu was in her early teens, her father, a peripatetic, erudite Ghanaian who was idolized by his daughter, died. That event in and of itself would be enough to unsettle a young person just coming into her own. But for Owusu, it marked the beginning of a period of tumult that extended far beyond her father’s death. Rejected by her biological mother, who had left the family years earlier, and grudgingly tolerated by her stepmother, Owusu began acting out and getting in trouble. While that trouble left lasting scars, it also gave her grist for what would become her startling, original, and moving memoir.
