This is impossible to measure but likely to be true: Of all the corners in the world, Le Sirenuse must be one of the highest-ranking happy places. Simply put, the hotel, family-owned and operated by the Sersales, is about as good as it gets. It’s where, for decades, travelers with a sweet tooth for la dolce vita have been served a generous portion of it. Nestled into the cliffside of the Amalfi coast village of Positano, the property is one that’s perfumed with lore. Its name comes from the cluster of rocky islands visible from the hotel, the waters of Homer’s lethal but enchanting sirens. And no history of Le Sirenuse is complete without a mention of John Steinbeck’s famous description of it. In 1953, two years after the hotel’s opening, the American author visited and documented his Le Sirenuse stay in the book A Journey to Positano. He would also write an essay on the charms of Le Sirenuse: “Every room has its own little balcony and looks out over the blue sea to the islands of the sirens from which those ladies sang so sweetly.”

But in a year when so many city dwellers have been limited to their cramped apartments, the first thing on the travel to-do list is probably ROAM FREE. For additional views, drive seven minutes to Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, where trails follow the coastal bluff and lead through the Monterey pine forest. Stay on the lookout for California Gray Whales, which migrate south from late December through February; they head back north in March and April. If it rains? Go out anyway, knowing that when you come back, the rest of the day can be spent curled up in front of your room’s fireplace.
